The Viking Game
The Viking Game • PCODE 00-097 • PID 119
One of the oldest board games found in Europe. Two Viking villages compete to either capture the king or get the king into one of the safe corner spaces using the rook's move from Chess.
The Viking Game must rank as one of history's greatest board games. It was at its most popular during the Dark Ages in Northern Europe, a period of scant records and shifting populations. Like so much of the history of this time, our knowledge of the Viking Game is patchy, a mystery now half solved as a result of archaeological research.
The two sets of pieces represent Viking villages. While the white warriors try to get their king to one of the corner spaces, the other villagers try to capture the king, by flanking it on four sides. Using the rook's move from Chess, the game looks simple but is deceptively challenging! A great game for all the family to play and also great to play in schools.
